This October, I began mentoring students in beautiful Shenandoah County, Virginia. I spent a busy morning with six wonderful third grade classes at Ashby Lee Elementary (the largest number of classes I have worked with in one school visit to date). Based on their recent science curriculum, the students were particularly fascinated by the concept of gravity. The students at Ashby Lee are fortunate to have a science fair in the spring, and I am excited to return to the school to work with Ms. Julie Guinn as she hosts the fair. It will be wonderful to work with students throughout the process of idea generation leading up to the fair. In an effort to inspire excitement and ideas, I worked with the students to analyze my science fair project from middle school on how the color of a material affects its temperature when exposed to a light source representing the sun. We discussed the importance of connecting scientific findings to making the world a better place and generated ideas for real-world applications of this experiment, building on my idea of temperature-sensitive, color changing roof tiles for energy efficiency. The students' ideas were particularly inventive, and I look forward to their science fair presentations in the spring!
