Following the conference, I was invited to attend the ASTM Women in Standards annual dinner with NIBS communications director Gretchen Hesbacher. This proved to be an immensely rewarding opportunity, as I was able to engage with pioneering women of several different generations who have worked in the standards field. We discussed my Women in Science documentary project and this subsequent outreach program, as well as the different challenges that women in STEM fields have encountered over generations of educational and career pursuits. It was fascinating and rewarding to learn more standards work in general, as well as the contributions that women have made to the field. Our dinner was later featured in the ASTM magazine's Women in Standards issue!
During winter break, I returned to Washington, D.C. to work with the incredible National Institute of Building Sciences staff as a volunteer at the Building Innovation Conference and Expo. (I worked at NIBS as a science, technology, and engineering policy intern during the summer of 2017.)
