About Mary-Michael:
I graduated as a Jefferson Scholar from the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science in May 2019, receiving a B.S. with High Distinction in civil engineering with minors in urban and environmental planning, global sustainability, and science and technology policy. I was honored to be selected as the recipient of the SEAS Outstanding Student of the Year Award as well as the Z Society's Edgar F. Shannon Award for the engineering school.
I am building upon my civil engineering education by pursuing a concentration in real estate and land use within the Master of Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP) program at the UVA School of Architecture. As of May 2020, I am a Real Estate Design & Development Fellow working for the UVA Foundation.
I am looking forward to working at the intersections of engineering, planning, real estate, and law to build healthier, happier, and more equitable community-focused projects.
I worked as a graduate teaching assistant for Professor Jenny Roe's Healthy Cities course in the spring of 2020 and for Professor Ellen Bassett's Law, Land, and the Environment course during the fall of 2019. I will work as a Student Instructor Assistant for both developer Ian Klein's Applied Real Estate Studio course and Professor Jenny Roe's Psychology of Environment and Space course in the fall of 2020.
As an undergraduate at UVA, I was active in student government, serving as the President of Engineering Student Council and President of the Rodman Scholars Council. I also served as an undergraduate research assistant for Dr. Jonathan Goodall's Hydroinformatics Group, through which I co-authored the paper "Using Random Forest Classification and Nationally Available Geospatial Data to Screen for Wetlands over Large Geographic Regions," published in the journal Water in 2019. I also served as a member of the editorial board of The Spectra (undergraduate engineering research journal).
I worked as a policy intern specializing in outcome-based compliance paths for energy codes at the National Institute of Building Sciences as the MIT-UVA SEAS Policy Internship Program's Barbara and Dudley White Fellow.
I studied abroad through the UVA School of Commerce's Sustainable Practices in Denmark and Sweden program during the May term. Upon my return to Charlottesville, I worked as a research intern for the Southern Environmental Law Center's Land and Community Program. In August 2018, I attended the ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings in Pacific Grove, California as a Linda Latham Scholar.
